Animation to assist Literacy

Longton High City Learning Centre helped students from Heron Cross Primary School in years 5 and 6 successfully complete Animation sessions to assist their literacy projects.

Year 5 students wanted to create a short scene from the “Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The students built their models using plastacine and existing toys.  They also build their own backdrops on A3 paper.  Media technologist, Phil then showed the students how to use the stop motion software ” I can animate”.

After the initial animation session the children then exported their movies, and edited it using the iMovie software on the Apple Macbooks. The children all enjoyed their work, and the teacher Mrs Sanders was impressed with the engagement and teamwork shown.

The following day  Mr Chubb’s  year 6 students worked on 2d animation.  Again the students created the characters by using paper cutouts with movable limbs.  They then used stills cameras on tripods to film the animation.   We then edited the movie in Imovie and added sound and titles.  Day 3 Was used as a recap for the year 6 Students, A group, made up of students who had been on a school trip during the original session created Human Animations.

Where we took a series of shots of the children moving around in different ways and then animated them to various effect.  The City Learning Centre and Heron Cross Primary will be working together to create a school resource using  Maths based Animations in Late June.

BBC School Report - Stoke

Stoke CLCs are proud to Co-ordinate the participation of Stoke on Trent Schools in the “BBC School Report”.

Students from nine schools from across Stoke-on-Trent came to the City Learning Centres at Longton and Haywood High Schools.

Participating schools were:

Longton High | Trentham High School | St Josephs College |Edensor Technology College |Mitchell |St Margaret Ward | Birches Head | Haywood High | Thistley Hough

Stoke CLCs are proud to Co-ordinate the participation of Stoke on Trent Schools in the “BBC School report”.

Students spent the morning finalising their news reports and practicing before going on camera. some students recorded telephone interviews whilst others interviewed members of the public.

They then filmed their reports in the T.V studio.

St Josephs News Students at St Josephs college reported on the find of the Staffordshire hoard and the campaign to keep it in the Potteries Museum in Hanley. Trentham also reported on the Early success of Tim Burtons new Movie “Alice in wonderland”

Thistley Hough News Students from Thistley Hough delivered a Sports report about the regions football teams and how they fared in recent matches in the English Soccer Leagues. The Second report was regarding the announcement of many job cuts to the Staffordshire Police Force.

Trentham News Trentham High School reported about a cultural exchange system between their school and a school in South Africa. The Second report was about how the Staffordshire hoard had impacted on the Local economy.

Podblast - Showcast your Podcasts

Stoke on Trent City learning Centres have been working on a “front end” Website to house all the podcasts made by the city’s schools.  Podblast is now live and schools who have activated their Podium license can register for free to upload their work.

The CLC has purchased Podium Podcasting software for use in all schools across the city. Podium allows you create podcasts quickly and easily. So , If you are interested in sharing and showcasing your podcasts with other schools in the City then please get in touch with us here at the City Learning Centres, and we will get you started with your podcasts and show you how to upload them into Podblast easily.

Phil Gregory produced the first Podcast for the site and Mark Bunyan has been working with James Brindley High School and Science College to produce a set of revision Podcasts for Science.

Eight schools have been invited to take part in a 12-month CLC funded ‘Mathletics’ project for upper KS2 and lower KS3.

Each school has allocated numbers of pupils who will have access to the computer based materials both at home and at school. The project looks to promote cross-phase development and pupil engagement with mathematics.

Two initial meetings will commence  the project, where Lisa Peacock from Mathletics will be explaining the administrative and organisational details.

These training dates 28th January at Haywood City Learning Centre and 9th Feb at Longton City Learning Centre, both from 3.30-5pm.

The four pupils were presented with their award – a Nintendo Wii each – by TV presenter Jason Bradbury, from the Gadget Show.

Pupils from a Stoke-on-Trent primary school are celebrating after walking away with a national award which showcased their use of modern technology.

The team of four, from Packmoor Primary School, were chosen as one of six national winners in the “Y Factors” competition, which looks at innovation and ingenuity by young people using modern “gadgets” such as mobile ‘phones. There were 200 schools competing for one of the six top places in the competition.

In the case of the Packmoor Year 5 and 6 students, they were challenged to use “smart” ‘phones (a phone that offers advanced capabilities, with a PC function) for a school project which saw them create their own mobile websites as well as writing and performing a musical rap video called “Switch that mobile phone off!” They also captured data via GPS on their ‘phones, as they toured every town in the Potteries to learn about the culture of Stoke-on-Trent.

The students were helped by advisor Jenny Hulme, an expert in eLearning. She said: “The enthusiasm and creativity of the children was terrific and this was an excellent opportunity for children from the city to be at the forefront of an e-learning initiative – both City Learning Centres and the school are very proud of them.”

Cabinet member for children and young people’s services, Councillor Ian Mitchell, said: “I never cease to be amazed by the willingness of young people to embrace new technology and the speed with which they understand the most complex pieces of equipment. This is a real tribute to them, the school and the CLCs.”

Greenscreen

To launch our new green screen facilities here at Stoke CLC’s we have  been working with Year 8 at Haywood Engineering College. The CLC’s media technologist has been working closely with the class to conceptualise, storyboard, script and film this alternative telling of ‘A Christmas Carol’. This remaking of a famous Dickens classic in a modern setting through the medium of a news report has worked particularly well. If you are interested in similar projects for your school please contact us.

Now that the film is produced and edited (complete with background scenes), the class will soon benefit from the literacy input required to produce a comic book detailing the story. Using Comic Life on our MacBook Pro’s the students will take screen grabs from the movie and construct their own version of the dialogue in the script. Producing this project in two forms of media will benefit all the class by providing a real opportunity to produce creative writing thus improving literacy.

• Longton CLC – Elmo L-1ex Visualiser Training on 9 December

Schools who attended the above events are now loaning equipment from the CLC’s to use with their children in  school.  Many of the schools are now trialling the use of ActivExpression Voters, FlipVideo Cameras and Elmo L-1ex Visualisers to support their work towards completing the SRF and achieving Next Gerneration Learning Charter, ICT Recognition/Full ICT Mark.
